1. Fights for regular payment of salaries and other entitlements due teachers
2. Ensures that all salary increments paid to other workers are extended to Teachers
3. Fought and secured the payment of Teaching Enhancement Allowance (TEA) of 27.5% on the basic salary of each teacher
4. Fights for regular promotion of Primary and Post Primary School Teachers in the State
5. Ensures that teachers from the State participate in all World Teachers Day Celebrations both at the State and National levels
6. Fights for increment of budgetary allocation to Education sector to ensure payment of teachers entitlements and for the promotion of Education generally
7. Defends teachers against undue and unlawful victimization by Government, parents and the unfriendly members of the communities where teachers may be posted to render their legitimate services.
8. Fought and secure Harmonized service year extension for teachers. Teachers can now retire on attainment of 65 years of age or 40 years of service which ever comes first.
9. Negotiates with government to secure better condition of service for teachers
10. Fights for better condition of service for members to facilitate improvement in the quality of Education in the State
11. Protects the fundamental Human right of members
12. The Union has been organizing periodic trade union Education for teachers
13. It provides opportunity for teachers to exchange ideas on professional matters within and outside the State 14. Encourages teachers to interact with Education clientele and promotes close cooperation between teachers and parents.
15. Building of a befitting Teachers House Secretariat at 14 IBB Way, Uyo
16. NUT provides a forum for teachers of the State to speak with one voice on matters affecting Education and their welfare
17. Establishment of economic and welfare services for teachers eg. Akwa Ibom Teachers Multi-Purpose cooperation Society
18. Cooperated with the National, Head Office to secure the establishment of State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in all States of the Federation.
19. Join forces with the National Head Office of NUT to bring about the establishment of the Secondary Education Commission (SEC)
20. To provide leadership and a common front to fight against government policies and actions that may be inimical to the progress of teachers and education industry
21. Acts like a watchdog in the education system
22. The NUT was instrumental to the establishment of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) facilitate the professionalization of teaching in Nigeria.
23. The NUT has been advocating for improvement of physical facilities such as, more classroom blocks, libraries and laboratories in the school system.
